Add the continuing cost
Compare device price, mandatory membership, optional features, accessories and likely replacement costs. Use the same time period for every option. Confirm current terms directly with the provider, because pricing and feature access can change.
A simple example
Imagine a $300 device with a $15 monthly subscription. Over three years the total is $840 before accessories or replacement. A hypothetical $500 device with no required membership costs less over that period—if it actually performs the tasks you need. These are invented examples, not current product prices.
Ask what happens when you stop paying
Can you still see basic records? Can you export your history? Does cancellation remove access to features that motivated the purchase? Read the applicable terms before assuming your data and reports will remain accessible indefinitely.
Price the inconvenience too
Check charging requirements, warranty arrangements and compatibility with your phone. A lower total is only useful if the device suits your routine. Avoid buying multiple devices that duplicate the same job unless you can explain the practical benefit.
