How to budget for chiller electricity

Use consumption and your tariff, not the headline cooling rating.

Ask for the right measurement

Request average daily electrical consumption in kilowatt-hours for a stated test setup. Ask the supplier to include the model, ambient conditions, water volume, temperature setting and operating schedule. A number without those conditions is difficult to apply to your home.

Do not mix capacity with consumption

Cooling output, electrical input and energy consumption are different quantities. A cooling-capacity figure describes heat removal; it is not a daily electricity bill. For a simple continuous-input scenario, kW multiplied by hours gives kWh. Equipment that cycles needs a more realistic estimate of actual consumption.

Use a range rather than one reassuring number

Create a lower and higher daily-consumption scenario with your own tariff. As an arithmetic example only, 2 kWh/day at A$0.30/kWh costs A$219/year; 5 kWh/day costs A$547.50/year. Those values are not estimates for a specific product. Run both through our ownership-cost planner.

Keep the energy question separate from upkeep

Ritual’s FAQ describes cycling operation and identifies operating conditions that affect use. It also discusses maintenance. Even a low electricity bill does not cover filters, water, cleaning or repairs. Obtain a separate consumables budget.

Check actual use after purchase

Ask an appropriately qualified person about a suitable way to measure consumption for the installation. Record the measurement period and conditions so you can compare it with the pre-purchase estimate. Do not improvise electrical connections to obtain a reading.
